Taking IoT into the sky
Making an airline trolley smarter: sounds easy. However, developing a smart, connected device in the air proves to be quite challenging. It is a technological puzzle on many levels. Think device (lifespan of the battery versus costs, airline regulations that ban the use of lithium-based batteries), connectivity while in the air, software (how much sensor data can the device store on the internal SD card, and what is the max time before its integrated sensor detects Wi-Fi so it can send securely to the cloud?). But more importantly: the process on top of the technical building blocks is distinctly people driven. The development of an IoT system is a multidisciplinary activity that goes much further than building an app to turn on the heating at home. The software engineer, the domain specialist, the businessman, the hardware developer and the data scientist will have to put their heads together.
